Nuclear Glow Up
The noise of the alarm in the background when Dad would call home to tell me goodnight. I used to wait for him coming home from night-shift knowing that he’d been to the site shop and would bring me a bag of broken biscuits..
The visitors centre was the highlight of our school year, pulling up in the bus, seeing the giant silver Atom, walking through the glass doors, travelling in the glass lift, walking down the tunnel to see the story of the Mighty Atom and sitting in the auditorium learning about the nuclear reactor not to mention the amazing cakes that we used to get from the cafe!
Driving around Cumbria, trying to dodge the big blue flasks so we could get to school on time! And my favourite game in the world….. Spot the big pink socks hanging from washing lines gardens across the county
The first monday of every month, the emergency alarm/siren would sound and you could hear it for miles around, and after strict drill instructions from my dad, we could go around the house and close all the windows and doors and do exactly what the article said in the Whitehaven News the week before.
The Sellafield Community back in the day has given me some of the best Childhood Memories and as an ode to that, I would like to present “Nuclear Glow up –
